Jen gave members attending a workshop on how she makes her improv pieced blocks. We all left with a completed block. What fun! Thank you, Jen.

October Meeting Highlights

We had our October meeting on the 25th with 9 members in attendance. Click here to review the meeting minutes.

Our members yet again showed their creativity making the October BOM blocks in orange and gray. Symone was the lucky winner! Don’t you think the blocks turned out beautiful?

JMQG OCT BOMFour of our members also brought in their quilts and work in progress tops for the Quilt Your Style Challenge,  which has been extended to the November meeting to allow more members to participate.

Jen made this beautiful little quilt made in her favorite color and pieced using her favorite improv style. ( Jen is doing a workshop to show her improv technique after the November meeting; more information to follow). Check out the awesome back too!

JMQG OCT 6 Billie made a beautiful floral art quilt that she was still hand quilting.

JMQG OCT 1JMQG OCT 3Valerie suggested starting a members’ library, where a list of books/patterns/rulers that can be loaned is compiled and members can borrow media for  a particular time period. If you have some  items that you want included in the library, please submit a list to Val either by e-mailing us or at the next meeting.

Some of the exciting upcoming happenings at our guild include Jen’s improv workshop after the November meeting  and our Christmas party on 12/13.  Stay tuned for further information about both of these events. Hard to believe that 2014 is almost over, but it sure is, and we are looking for ideas and suggestions for new programs/workshops that you are interested in learning in 2015. If you have any suggestions, please e-mail us.

Our next meeting will be held on November  22nd at 10 a.m at the South Mandarin Library. See you all then.

November Block of the Month: Improv Chevron!

Jacqie Gering's Improv Chevron block
Jacqie Gering’s Improv Chevron block.

Improve (free) piecing is one of the most recognizable aesthetic of modern quilting! So let’s prepare for Jen’s workshop by making this improv chevron block from Jacquie Gering. This will be our last BOM for 2014, oh where has the year gone?

Fabric Requirements: Pink and black. Fabric choices must be either solid (any shade of  orange and gray) or tonals that “read” as pink and black.  No high contrast fabrics. We will be making a block that is 12.5” unfinished.

PSSST!  Don’t forget to make an extra block for our charity quilt project!  You can make a duplicate  of your first block or you can design a new block!  The choice is yours!

Basics for Block of the Month program:

SOLID FABRICS:  We will be focusing on using solid fabrics because solid fabrics are one of the most common features found in modern quilting.   Tonal fabrics that “read” as a solid color can also be used in place of solid fabrics.

GIVE AND GET:  Members who bring in a block will be given a ticket.  A lottery will be drawn to determine the winner who takes home all of the blocks.  One ticket per block.

FAIR SHAKE:  Please use fabric that you LIKE (or LOVE) for blocks you will be putting in to the lottery.   Please do not use the BOM lottery as a way to get rid of “uglies” and “red-headed-stepchildren” fabric that you do not like.

MODERN DESIGN:  We will be using the BOM program and lottery to learn about the modern quilting design ideas embraced by The Modern Quilt Guild.  These design ideas include improvisational piecing; slash, slice, and dice; “wonky” lines; negative space; and a handful of other techniques.
