March Meeting Recap with swoon-worthy show-n-tell!

It was a beautiful day here on Sunday, and how great that 27 members and one visitor took the time out of the lovely day to spend a couple of hours together talking quilts! The show and tell was one for the books! So much talent and heart. From purses to bags, to small and large quilts, we had them all! Take a look at Instagram @JAXMQG or Facebook Jacksonville Modern Quilt Guild page to see more photos.

Please join me in welcoming our newest member Kathy, who joined us for the very first time in March. Our visitor Gayle, asked about joining info, come one Gayle, you know you want to come play with us!

A couple of announcements from the meeting:

  • We still have 3 openings for Mel Beach’s Intriguing Interleaves workshop. For more info and to sign up, click here.
  • Candi started sending out a monthly newsletter to ensure that all members are staying in the loop and to avoid the need for rehashing old business during meetings. To alert members that newsletter emails were sent out, Candi will update IG and FB accounts to announce that emails were sent. Hopefully, this avoids having the newsletter email being lost in email jungles.
  • We started providing a door prize during meetings! (who doesn’t love a prize?)! Our first gift bag was provided by Lisa, and Margaret D won the goodie bag. How fun! Thank you, Lisa!
  • Candi did a presentation on What Is Modern Quilting. No one fell asleep, so that is a win! Next month, Franci will be doing a demo on sandwiching a large quilt on a card table. Come see if you are tired of crawling on the floor!

The main new business that was presented during the meeting was a proposal for using a QuiltCon charity quilt that was made in 2017, as a fundraising quilt with hundred percent of the proceeds going to UNICEF Ukraine.

Falling to Pieces Quilt

The proposal received an enthusiastic response from members in attendance. Candi registered with the state of Florida to hold the fundraiser. And it was decided that as Lisa, our Charity Chair, gets the tickets and paperwork done, members will be contacted, and tickets will be provided to members willing to solicit donations from their family and friends for an opportunity to win the quilt above! Of course, members can also just donate themselves if they do not wish to solicit donations. Our goal is to raise $1500. Stay tuned for more information on this.

During the meeting, Laura brought the gigantic quilt, with tiny pieces, that she made after Made Of Honor’s workshop a few years ago, how amazing is this? We did a little search for her very first tiny block, which was fun, albeit a little dizzying!

Laura also presented our new challenge for April:

Block Lottery for April: Quilt Block Beer Pairing
There are so many really cool beer logos and names these days. We want you to look to these logos for your inspiration.
Participants will make a 12.5”x12.5” unfinished quilt block.
This block will be inspired by a beer logo of the participants choosing. Look up #beerlogo #beerlogos #beerstagram #craftbeeraddict #instabeer #craftbeersnob
The block does not have to look exactly like the logo. Check out the hashtag #quiltbeerpairing
Use the logo as color, shapes, feeling inspirations. Use traditional, Improv, applique, etc. to achieve the look you want. Bring the block to the April meeting and we will put them on the display board to OOOoooo and AAAaahhhh over.
Names of participants will be put in a drawing to win all of the blocks.
A color swatch was provided for those who want to participate. Must use a bit of this color in your block. A little or a lot, it’s your choice.
Color swatch is the paint chip for Behr Paint color Splendor Gold P250-6. If you did not get one at meeting, you can grab one from HomeDepot.

Our next sew-in will be held on April 9th at Pablo Creek Library from 10-2:30.

Our next meeting will be held on April 24th at 2 at Spring Glen United Methodist Church.

Hope to see you all soon!
