We’re Moving to the Beach

That’s right!!!  The Jacksonville MQG has found a new meeting and sewing location.

Our new location is the Neptune Beach Senior Activity Center, 2004 Forest Ave, Neptune Beach, FL 32266.

Our meeting day and time has also changed.   We will be meeting 2 – 7 pm on the last Sunday of each month, and those dates are:

  • July 30
  • August 27
  • September 24
  • October 29
  • November 26
  • December   TBD for our annual holiday gathering.

The NBSAC has a great meeting room, plenty of tables for our sewing machines, a full kitchen and lots more to offer our group.    Get directions to our new location Here

We hope to see everyone on July 30th.

October Meeting Highlights

Our October meeting was held on Saturday, October 29th at our new location at the Downtown Jacksonville Library.

This was our first meeting that was held in our new meeting place. We had a great meeting with Robin, Candi and Sara in attendance. Because of the low attendance, we were quickly able to plan out most of the year for programs and exciting events we hope you’ll enjoy. Everything that was discussed is listed in the minutes.  You can review the minutes here.

July Meeting Highlights

Our July meeting was held on Saturday, July 23 at the South Mandarin Library branch.

At the meeting our Program Committee provided treats for all and celebrated members with June birthdays.  You can review the minutes here.

During the meeting, members discussed sew-ins that are going on and the #QuiltsforPulse effort being started by the Orlando MQG. Everyone has been working hard sewing blocks/quilts and organizing sew-ins for this effort. Make sure you watch our blog and members Facebook page for times and places where there are sew-ins going on. Stay tuned to our blog for times and places on those also.

We then had State of the Guild discussion where members had an open and frank discussion about the purpose of the guild, what is expected of each of us, what we each are looking for and ways we can work together to form a successful modern quilt guild. The consensus was that there is a need for more communication and everyone needs to try and be more proactive.

At the end of the business meeting we had show and tell:

Members who completed their Paint Chip Challenge:

Ruth showed her quilt for Kathy’s daughter and the table runner she made for her sister.

Laurie showed her sofa quilt, throw quilt and tuffet in progress.

Adele showed her finished quilt that she used the glue basting technique.

And Mary Ann showed her quilt she made for Quilts for Pulse.

That’s it for now. Stay tuned for more info.

Next business meeting is to be determined for August.

June Meeting Highlights

Our June meeting was held on Saturday, June 25 at the South Mandarin Library branch.

At the meeting our Program Committee provided treats for all and celebrated members with June birthdays.  You can review the minutes here.

We had a new member join during the meeting. Her name is Maureen and she comes all the way from Georgia. She has many years of experience quilting and is looking forward to meeting modern quilters like herself. Welcome Maureen!

During the meeting, members discussed sew-ins that are going on and the #QuiltsforPulse effort being started by the Orlando MQG. Our member, Jen, has been working hard sewing blocks/quilts and organizing sew-ins for this effort. Make sure you watch our blog and members Facebook page for times and places where there are sew-ins going on. Other members, including Robin and Yvonne are hosting events throughout Jacksonville during the month of July. Stay tuned to our blog for times and places on those also.

We then had our Pin Cushion/Thread Catcher swap. Whoever brought in a pin cushion was able to choose a pin cushion as their name was drawn.

At the end of the business meeting we had show and tell:

Ruth showed her chevron quilt and the heart quilt she will be donating to #QuiltsforPulse.

And Joan brought some beautiful quilts she had been working on.

That’s it for now. Stay tuned for more info.

Next business meeting is Saturday, July 23, 2016 at the South Mandarin Library branch. Hope to see you all there!

JMQG Meeting Updates

For April:  Since we will be having our retreat on that fourth Saturday, we cancelled the reservation and booked 4/30 (fifth Saturday) for the meeting (room is only available until 1:30 PM but we figured it shouldn’t be a problem since it’s the week right after the retreat and we might be sewn out).

For May:  Someone pointed out that the fourth Saturday is Memorial Day weekend, so we booked the third Saturday for our meeting but kept the reservation for the holiday weekend in case we want to have a sew-in. We can take poll at the next meeting. The guild calendar has been updated with these changes.

February Meeting Highlights

Our February meeting was held on the 3rd Saturday of the month instead of the 4th because the library wasn’t available. Thanks to the gracious hospitality of Ladybug Quilt Shop we were able to hold our meeting there on the 3rd Saturday to allow the 4th Saturday to be available for people who wanted to attend Quilt Week in Daytona Beach.

At the meeting our Program Committee provided treats for all and gifts for members with February birthdays.  You can review the minutes here.

During the meeting, Robin discussed how there was still a need for an Instagram Moderator. Yvonne announced that her and Tony were going to volunteer for the Charity Committee but would still need volunteers to help the committee.

The Annual Retreat was discussed. It is going to be held this year at Ladybug Quilt Shop on April 22, 23 and 24. Check the blog for more information.

At the end of the business meeting we had show and tell:

Here were the finished January BOMs.

January Meeting Highlights

Happy New Year!  What a great meeting and a great start to the new year. We welcomed back old and new members. New officers were introduced and our new Program Committee provided treats for all and gifts for members with January birthdays.  You can review the minutes here.

Introductions were made of our new board. Robin is continuing as President, Adele is our new Vice President, Yvonne is continuing as Treasurer,  and Sara is the new Secretary.

Our new Program Committee was also introduced. Adele, Candi, Joan and Mary Ann are now our new Program Committee/Hospitality. They really did a great job with hospitality for this meeting. During the meeting they informed us of all the fun and educational programs they have planned during the year. This month is our first quarterly challenge, the Fold-it, Snip-it, Rip-it, Drop-it, Pass-it Challenge. We all stood in a circle and each started with a yard of solid color fabric we chose and then folded, snipped, ripped, dropped then passed until we each had seven pieces. The challenge then is for each of us to make a quilt using each of the seven fabrics we have. Look for more info on this challenge from the Programs Committee in future blog posts.

As part of the Program Committee’s initiative on offering educational demonstrations, Candi gave us a PowerPoint presentation on What is Modern Quilting and the Modern Quilt Guild’s website and everything it has to offer members.

Robin discussed the need for members to volunteer for Historian, Instagram Moderator, Retreat Committee and Charity Committee. During the meeting Tony graciously volunteered to be Historian. He will take pictures of our quilts and document them then give that information to the Quilt Alliance and also to our Secretary for our blog. If anyone is interested in volunteering for any of the remaining positions, please see a member of the board.

At the end of the business meeting we had show and tell:

Yvonne showed the finished top of one of the Love Quilt Project quilts,

20160123_124216

Candi showed her quilt she did entitled Trilogy,

Ruth showed her finished Round Robin that is a quilt for her soon to be born grandchild, Everett,

and our new visitor, Pat, showed one of her mini quilts.

20160123_125901

During the meeting there was a discussion on having our February business meeting on February 20th instead of at the QuiltWeek field trip on February 27th in Daytona Beach. This would allow members who couldn’t attend the field trip to still be able to attend the business meeting. Stayed tuned for more specifics on our next business meeting and field trip.

That’s it for now. Stay tuned for more info.

November Meeting Highlights

It was a short and sweet meeting, you can read the minutes here.

Ted announced (via text message) the new officers that will serve the JMQG starting January 2016 through December 2017. Since the nominations were unopposed, no election was needed. The officers are as follows:

President: Robin McCallister .

Vice President: Adele Rivers

Treasurer: Yvonne Wecker

Secretary: Sara David

Thanks to all four of you for volunteering. Hooray! We are ready for 2016!

Jaime won the old to new blocks BOM!

Ok, a couple of reminders before I show you photos from our fabulous show and tell. There will be no meeting in December, instead we will be having a Christmas party at Ruth’s house (thank you very much for hosting us, Ruth) on December 12th, starting at 6 PM. Please watch your e-mails for an RSVP and food sign-up list as well as directions to Ruth’s house.

We will have a filled stocking swap at the party, you can find the rules here. And for round robin participants, the big reveal will happen during the party. All rounds should be finished and finished tops need to be present at the party. If you are unable to attend the party, please coordinate to get the top there, and thank you! I am so looking forward to the reveal, it will be fantastic!

Ok, so back to November’s show and tell. I’d love to start with this little cute guy that Janette brought to show us made by a quilter who knew about another quilter 🙂 Adorable!
